Modern Fireplace Ideas: Interior designers are pushing the boundaries with contemporary fireplaces by viewing them as sculptural centerpieces with renewed appreciation for incorporating them as a dramatic focal point. The renaissance of this classic architectural element elevates the space with unique materials, finishes, and curated form.
Today’s fireplace inserts range from gas to electric, long, narrow, wide, and square. In 2025, expect to see linear fireplaces with clean lines, two-toned finishes, fluting details, rich copper hues, unique shapes, and dramatically veined marble.
Architectural elements like double-sided fireplaces and floor-to-ceiling designs are also gaining popularity. Bold colors and mixed materials add to the trend of creating unique and thoughtfully designed fireplaces. 1. Balance & Harmony Within the Space
Good interior design creates a sense of balance and harmony within any given space. When choosing a design for your fireplace, consider the color palette, furniture placement, and lighting fixtures to identify the materials that would complement the existing design elements.
In a stunning modern living room designed by Ali Budd, a stunning marble fireplace serves as the room’s focal point. The space flows seamlessly and embodies a contemporary and sophisticated aesthetic with a touch of warmth and comfort.

2. Infuse Luxurious Touches
Achieve a sense of luxury, richness, and serenity by choosing a fireplace surround that echoes luxurious touches, a crafted design, and a tailored approach. In an elegant and refined neutral living room designed by 1508 London, an antique fireplace surround is topped with a large mirror framed in gold. The mantel features a delicate floral arrangement, a fragrance reed diffuser, and sculptural objects.

3. Celebrate Texture
Texture provides a ‘lived in feeling’ while creating visual interest and depth, that invites people to congragate. In a living room designed by Hilary Matt, custom-stained white oak millwork surrounds the fireplace and ceiling.
The wood wall adds character to this stately design, giving the room a warm and distinct glow. A timeless and functional Barone™ Limestone surround serves as the centerpiece of this gorgeous room. Whether it’s the addition of wood, stone, brass, or copper elements, the patina over time enhances notions of human connection.

4. Balance Minimalist Architecture with Unexpected Details
Clean lines, pared-back sculptural forms, and elements of layered warmth create a space that feels elevated and deeply personal. Create a considered environment that reflects your personal style by adding in moments of surprise.
House of Jade Interiors created this striking tall fireplace with unexpected linear details that take the design to the next level. These organic fluted vertical lines add depth and dimension while adding texture and a lovely sculptural quality.

5. Embrace Marble
Nothing compares to the organic beauty of a natural stone. This year, designers are playing with bold designs, alternative finishes, edge treatments, and unique shapes. With the vast variety of colours & veining, marble is as versatile as it is elegant.
In a living room designed by New York designer Emily Del Bello, an ethereal and luxe, dramatically veined marble surround adorns a fireplace with a herringbone insert. Two Rosie Li Studio Laurel Blossom Wallmounts add the perfect finishing touch to this masterpiece.

6. Extend to the Height of the Room
Perhaps you’ve noticed that most of the fireplaces featured here so far share a common design element – they extend to the full height of the room. This feature emphasizes and enhances the ceiling height and provides the opportunity to extend and present contrasting finishes in a fluid and refined way. In a modern rustic living room in a California-style villa in Montecito, designer Birgit Klein created a full-height fireplace finished in metal that pairs perfectly with reclaimed wood beams and limestone finished walls.

7. Make a Bold Statement With Green
Nature takes center stage in 2025, as lush greens dominate the runway and bring the beauty of the outdoors into our homes. Instead of painting the walls green, consider turning your fireplace into a statement with a bold and contemporary hue.
Interior designer Michelle Boudrea designed this textured linear fireplace in a modern living room with soft-pale green tiles and a channel-tufted wall that echoes the upholstery on two accent chairs. Abstract wallpaper features a green swirling pattern that ties the space together.

8. Add Aesthetic Appeal With Rich Autumnal Tones
Rich Autumnal hues such as deep greens, warm earthy browns, golden oranges, and shades of terracotta instantly make a living room warm and inviting and exude depth. It’s perfect for those who embrace artisan craftsmanship and handmade elements. Dark olive green walls contrast beautifully with a white marble surround and earth tone furniture in a gorgeous modern living room.

9. Fluted Wood Details
Natural wood fluting is an excellent choice if you want to add a natural and organic quality to your fireplace surround. Designer Reena Sotropa incorporated fluted millwork that wraps on either side of a fireplace that opens to the kitchen behind. This vertical fluting provides a gorgeous texture that complements the stone fireplace surround.

10. Flank With Arches
Arches on either side of the fireplace work in many design styles, from modern to coastal, farmhouse, and contemporary. It also provides a wide variety of design options. Here, The Lifestyled Co. created a beautiful feature wall with a marble fireplace surround and TV flanked by two arches with built-in cabinetry. Open shelving provides the opportunity to display sculptural objects, pottery, plants, books, and home decor.

11. Open Shelving On Either Side
A standard and effective way of turning your fireplace into a striking feature wall is by flanking either side with open shelving. In the image above, arches were used to create visual interest. In the photo below, Vernich Interiors flanked either side of an elegant fireplace design with wood-framed custom cabinetry. Here, the design includes shiplap detailing behind the open shelving, but you could also apply a stunning wallpaper, unique tiles, or paint for contrast.

12. Wallpaper Around the Fireplace
Gray Space Interiors covered the wall with textured wallpaper in another image, where the fireplace is flanked by built-in cabinetry with open shelving. Note that the TV and the fireplace’s black inner frame match width to keep the lines clean and visually balanced. White cabinetry and fireplace surround contrast dramatically with the warm tones in the wallpaper, creating a striking focal point.
