Crate & Barrel Interior Design Ideas for Spring 2020
Crate & Barrel introduced a new collection in January 2020 that is rich with handcrafted detail, inspired by the Portuguese way of living artfully. Relaxed and free-flowing, it’s a point of view that knows the beauty of life is in the little things. Surround yourself with what you love and create a home where you feel the most yourself.
The Portugal Life
With cobbled streets and stunning architecture, Portugal has long inspired Crate & Barrel’s vision for modern design. And not just its earthy palette of dusky pinks and rich blues, but also the lifestyle of the people who call the country home – relaxed, casual and welcoming with a great appreciation for art and craftsmanship. After visits through the cities and hills, their designers see Portugal as the perfect mix of European high design and rugged natural beauty, creating an effortless balance that reveres history yet lives for today.
The Artist’s Studio
Dipped, Layered, Glazed, Loved
Even if you don’t consider yourself an artist, you still have your own space for creative exploration – your home. This season Crate & Barrel is drawn to colors and patterns that make us feel free and catch our eye with layers of hand-touched detail. Think artisan-glazed ceramics from Portugal, fabrics in fresh new pastels, patterns that remind us of Impressionist paintings. Is it special? Is it beautiful? Then it’s worthy of bringing home.

Light to Dark
Portuguese artisans craft the Caspian dinnerware collection out of durable stoneware that undergoes a special finishing process. Chemical changes during firing create one-of-a-kind patterns and luminous, variable tones. As it cascades down, the glaze transitions from light to dark, peppered throughout with unique markings and crackles.
Japan X Scandi
The next Crate & Barrel reveal is their new Japan X Scandi line. Two spectacular places, 5,000 miles apart. Both have revered design traditions that really sing together.
Minimalism isn’t about just one look or one set of rules. Take the Japanese version – rooted in mindfulness, it embraces both clean, modern lines and ancient decorative techniques like shibori, or the creation of patterns with indigo dye.
Then there’s Scandinavian minimalism – a strong emphasis on pure form and function, plus an unmistakable playful streak. So what do the island off of East Asia and the cluster of Northern European countries have in common, designwise?
Maybe because of their heavily forested areas or long, dark winters, both evolved design sensibilities that value natural light and use natural wood as much as possible. Both like to keep things simple yet beautiful. And when elements of each come together in this new collection, they both make us feel calm, at ease and right at home.

Leanne Ford Collection
A new collection by Crate & Barrel and Leanne Ford.
The star designer sits down with Crate & Barrel to talk inspiration, her hometown and their new furniture and décor collection.
If you’ve seen her work on TV or in magazines, you know Leanne Ford isn’t one for design rules. Here, the Pittsburgh native with the breezy L.A. sensibility tells us why.
“I’m all about livability in a modern way, which is the impression I’ve always had of Crate and Barrel. When I started sending sketches and ideas to your team, I could tell this was gonna be a great match. I wanted these pieces to be around forever. The more they’re lived in the better they get.”
