Fashion’s favorite print is timeless. This year get to see stripes in all sizes and colors on everything from chunky sweaters to knit dresses and oversize shirts. “Stripes are the equivalent to what a white t-shirt used to be back in the day,” says Roopal Patel, fashion director of Saks Fifth Avenue. “They have nine lives. We’ve seen the trend now for two to three seasons and it will continue to carry forward.”
Fashion goes graphic for Spring/Summer 2017. Vibrant, geometric prints, criss-cross stripes and bold color herald a 1970’s revival. “There was an imaginatively motivated subject over the runways,” says Kate Foley, contributing style executive of Vestiaire Collective. “From Roksanda and Céline to J.W.Anderson, Proenza Schouler, Marni, Valentino, and numerous different brands, whether straightforwardly propelled by a specific craftsman’s work, painterly prints, or examples, solid workmanship references will be setting down deep roots in 2017.”
This season brings in a wide variety of shades of this cheery color, from lemon to fluorescent. Pink will also reign supreme. From bright pinks to candy, deep cherry and raspberry. Brands like Brands like Céline, Valentino, Gucci, Loewe, and more sent out an assortment of rose-hued ensembles for spring 2017, solidifying the color’s “It” status among the fashion set for many more months to come. Neutrals include whites, creams and khakis. White shirt dresses with interesting waistlines and unexpected hemlines will ad an update to the simple white shirtdress. Metallics will also play a strong role in 2017 – all things shiny but with a contemporary edge.
Next year, get ready to cover up in voluminous sleeves and architectural shoulder pads reminiscent of the ’80s. Balenciaga, Jacquemus, and Saint Laurent sent various options down the runway for spring 2017, marking the end of this year’s much beloved double off-the-shoulder silhouette. This year fashion’s obsession with the shoulder will rage on, but with a single shoulder cut-out. Statement Earrings are still going strong. Statement earrings have been a favorite of the fashion set and partygoers this year, and it seems the trend will continue to dominate in 2017. Brands like J.W. Anderson, Delpozo, and Proenza Schouler all sent down big and bold baubles down the runway—some that even dip well past the shoulder.
“Sneakers will continue to be extremely popular in the upcoming year,” advises Gennie Yi, Intermix’s buyer of designer and ready-to-wear. “Because of their versatility, you can never have too many. Glitter, leopard, and satin updates to sneakers effortlessly dress up an outfit and give you a reason to buy multiple pairs.”
For 2017, designers are also proposing sky-high platforms, like Proenza Schouler’s spotted sandals and Gucci’s lofty loafers embellished with studs. After seasons of ubiquitous all-white kicks, a dramatic heel is a (much needed) breath of fresh air.
“One shoe trend we see really taking over in 2017 is the mule,” says Sean Kirschenbaum co-owner of The Shoebox. “Flat mules, low block-heel mules, heeled mules, sneaker mules, espadrille mules—mules in all fabrications and colors including velvet, satin, canvas, and embroidery. They were big for 2016 and they will be even bigger for 2017.”
